Server Clusters and Backups

2009 Server Cluster and Backups
Active Server Cluster
This is the set of servers where all the websites and emails are served and stored. There are two active servers with synchronized databases and file systems. Each has completely independent hardware. If one of the two servers goes down the other server is still able to serve web, email, and database requests without manual intervention. The third server receives a full copy of the database and file system each night and can only be made active by manual intervention.

Backup Server Cluster
This set of servers duplicates all the functionality of the Active Server Cluster... but is not active. The servers receive a copy of the databases and file system once a night. The cluster is stored in a different location and under separate management control from the Active Server Cluster. It can and will only be made active after catastrophic failure of the Active Server Cluster. In other words, it's more like a life insurance policy and will probably never be used. (Knock on wood.)

Offline Server Backup
This is a single server that receives a copy of the databases and file system every night. It, however, is not directly accessible from the Internet. It is less vulnerable to hacker attacks and is in a different geographic location than the Active or Backup Server Clusters.

Offsite FTP Backup
Every 15 days we take a snapshot of the databases and file systems and store the snapshot on a separate FTP service. These snapshots can protect us from subtle corruptions that might not be immediately detected and get replicated to the servers. It has also been used to restore old data. For example, clients occasionally delete all their inbox emails on accident. We use the snapshots to restore their emails.

As you can see, we take web hosting your website very seriously and go through great effort to keep your website always up and always backed up!

Cordially,
Patrick MacDonald
