New Image Spam Filtering

Finally!  We have developed a new image spam filtering tool to work along with our spam filtering software. It will never work 100% of the time but initial results show that it will help.

Spammer Image Attachments
Image Spam

Today we began scanning image attachments in emails using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to look for common spam words and phrases. While image spam has been around for years, there has been a recent increase in volume.

Those sneaky spammers use images to hide their sales pitch because it is difficult for spam filtering software to detect words embedded in images. Often, the actual email text will contain random sentences and phrases which make no logical sense. This is to throw off the spam filtering.

Will this always work? Absolutely not! This is a best attempt but we know it doesn't work for all spam images. However, initial tests show AthensGuy.com doing a better job at it than some of the big guys like Gmail.

How can you help? Use that "Report Spam" button to send us the spam emails with attached images. We'll take a look and see if we can stop those in the future. No guarantees though. ;)    Of course, remember to use the Temp Email generator in our webmail whenever you need to register your email on temporary online services. We've found that most of the worst kind of spam originates from passing around your email address on websites requiring registration.

As always, let us know if you have any questions!

Cordially,
Patrick MacDonald
