Every month or two a new virus hits the Internet and infects thousands of personal computers. Many of these viruses are programmed to steal the address books of the user and launch a relentless email campaign to all the domains in the address book. We now have server-side email filtering that can block these virus-infected emails from reaching your Outlook, Eudora, or other email client. The email virus filter will not be applied to your domain unless you request it.

Most of these virus emails are easily recognizable by a few common traits. The email headers are forged to look as if they came from the domain’s support staff, usually using “support@yourdomain.com”, “admin@yourdomain.com”, or some other variation. The subject and body of the emails are fictitious accounts of password changes or service cancellations. The final and potentially dangerous trait is the attached file at the bottom of the email. This attachment will contain a copy of the virus. The goal of the virus email is to get the email recipient to open the attachment and inadvertently infect their computer with the virus.

Our virus filter can scan the email before it ever reaches your email box. If it finds any known virus signatures in the email then it marks the email as “infected”. Your account settings can then prevent the email from entering your email box. The mail server will drop the virus safely into a quarantined email box called “VIRUS” which is only accessible through our WebMail product. This way, you can review your infected emails without actually downloading them to your computer and possibly infecting it in the process.

The email virus filter will not be enabled on your domain until you request it. Please contact us if you have any questions or wish to enable it. We also provide a server-side spam filtering solution. Both are provided as part of the web hosting fee and no additional charges will be applied to your account.
