Server Upgrade Success

We have successfully upgraded the primary web and database server to a more powerful Intel-based platform. The new operating system runs on our own AthensGuy.com custom Linux kernel. The new hardware and OS extends our processing power and further reduces the service time for our customers’ web users. This proactive upgrade demonstrates our commitment to providing top of the line services for our customers and our customers’ customers.

We are proud of our implementation plan and the lack of impact it had on our customers. The planning started over a month ago. We carried out the plan Thursday morning from 3am to 5am, and web services were down for only an hour. We perform almost all of our maintenance work in the early morning hours to prevent service interruption to our customers' websites.

The MySQL backend database has also been upgraded. Early in our testing, prior to the upgrade, we discovered SQL compatibility issues for some of our clients constraining us to MySQL version 4. We would like to have switched completely over to MySQL version 5. However, if you have a need for some of the new version 5 functionality then we can still install it on a non-standard port. Just let us know.

The change also allows us to implement more stringent security policies at the network and system call level to protect our customers' websites from the hacker threat that is ever present on the Internet.
