Off-On Slow Server for 15 Minutes
Posted on Wednesday, April 04 @ 20:35:00 EDT by admin

Web Hosting Service Announcements For a few minutes this afternoon, the AthensGuy.com webserver and customer websites were slow to load. The slowness was intermittent and only laster 15 minutes. We are still well below our acceptable outage parameters for our 99.9% uptime boasting.

The performance graphs for the time period below tell us more what it wasn't than what actually caused it.

This Static HTML response time tells us it was unrelated to the database since the database is not used to load a native HTML page.

The Ping response time graph gives a decent idea of the network responsiveness during the slow down. It obviously was not a network problem.

The CPU load average was low so it was not load related.

That leaves us with a little bit of a mystery. The apache server was serving even static pages slowly but the CPU, memory, disk and network were fine. It is possible we had a unusual spike load of requests. The number of pages apache was serving was normal up until the point it was unable to gather the count.

We certainly don't like mysteries but the problem was only intermittent for 15 minutes. We are still well below our acceptable outage parameters for our 99.9% uptime boasting. For the past 12 months we've maintained a 99.99% uptime.

If you have any questions or comments, as always, please let us know.

Cordially,
Patrick MacDonald
