Intermittent Website Loading Delays

On Thursday morning, October 23, 2008, we experienced some server sluggishness. Web pages were intermittently loading slowly between 10 am and 12 noon. The problem was traced to the IMAP email delivery service and inefficient service requests made to it by some Outlook clients. The slowness was only occurring a few minutes at a time so most website visitors were not affected.
According to our monitoring and manual inspection, the delays occurred at:
We have disabled IMAP as a email retrieval method indefinitely. The POP3 service provides permanent archiving, and the AthensGuy.com Webmail allows temporary access to your email from anywhere. The IMAP service had been enabled unintentionally.
