Better than the Big Guys

AthensGuy.com is ISP, Data Center, Hardware Vendor, and Geographically Diverse

In training to be the developer for AthensGuy.com Web Hosting, I worked for the big guys, several large and small ISPs over a 10 year span: BellSouth.net, Cox Communications, and Accucomm (which was absorbed by Alltel). I understand the Internet from concept to protocol and have seen first hand what technologies help reliability and which ones often hurt it. Big vendors will have you believe by paying lots of money for their hardware you'll be fully protected. There is no doubt those vendors will provide complex solutions with enough options to make your head spin. Through experience I have adopted this philosophy: the more gears a machine has, the more places it can break - K.I.S.S.

I've designed a simple but reliable web hosting solution. We lease physical servers from two of the most reliable and well connected data centers in the business, EV1Servers and 1&1. Why two data centers you ask? We can make a claim no other Web Hosting provider advertises. We are data center, vendor, and geographically redundant. Not only are our web hosting servers mirrored from Houston Texas to New York but they are mirrored between the two different data center providers and on different hardware vendor solutions. Now that's redundancy that translates to true reliability. We have maintained a 99.9% uptime since we started our business - including scheduled maintenance.

We manage the fail-over between one datacenter to the other manually.   The less gears, the less chance something breaks.   This eliminates the chance of false-positive alerts causing outages.   DNS is used to manage the actual "switching", and this is the reason we prefer to manage the DNS for our customers' domains as opposed to letting the basic registrars host it. We've tested failing over, and in most cases our DNS changes only take up to 3 hours to propagate to the Internet.

Another related topic is how we backup up your website in a way you know it's going to work.  The backups are stored in Georgia so your website is safe and secure in Kansas, Texas, and Georgia.

We are always looking for ways to improve our service.   If you have any comments or suggests please share them with us.

Cordially,
